Elmore County has a total area of 3,101 square miles and includes portions of the Sawtooth National Forest and the Boise National Forest. The 2024 US Census noted that Elmore County had a population of 29,729, experiencing a 3.7% growth in population since 2020. Elmore County was noted for its mining during Idaho's Gold Rush days, and has the Oregon Trail crossing through the county. For the past several decades, the US government has had a large presence in Elmore County, with the Mountain Home Air Force Base, providing employment and commercial opportunities to local residents. Like everywhere else in southwestern Idaho, Elmore County experienced a decline in average and median sales prices for single-family residential properties during the housing crisis of 2005-2007, but has recovered and is growing like most of the rest of southwest Idaho.
